Listening to the Intuitive Voice, Part II

Now, when feeling into any emotion, whether it be a slight irritation, anger…or full blown sadness/depression, the approach of not ignoring the energetic, sensation aspect of feelings is being suggested here: tuning into the visceral, overall vibration of the body when feeling low, in a funk…and then….

Here’s what seems to usually happen: We get emotionally triggered by some circumstance or incident and then the feeling and thought patterns go ‘round and ‘round the gravitational pull of our hurt feelings. We get stuck in thought and feeling loops.

However, something very special happens when we feel into the overall sensation of the body, tuning into the subtle underlying vibration of all feelings, the resonance or hum of Being.

When the mind/awareness connects with the subtle underlying hum, the habitual “circling the drain” feeling/thinking is short-circuited…and then here’s what happens: by the simple focusing upon the subtle overall sensation of the body, the mind is offered a window of opening to “shift tracks,” to one that leads into a deeper trance/swoon.

Now, in allowing the mind to “shift tracks,” the mind is guided to follow the prompts of the body to move, shake, vibrate in ways that dissolves and expels the energy of moods. There are many traditions, techniques and approaches that speak towards this…and the effectiveness in these approaches occur when there is an inner “getting,” when there is the visceral experience of being “danced” by the energetic prompts of the life force moving through the body.

How to Make “Oversensitivity” Work for You

img_0024

Someone asked recently, “How do you make your sensitivity work for you? When I think/feel into my own sensitivity, the first thing that comes to mind is “oversensitivity,” to my trigger points, to when things catch me “off-guard” so-to-speak.

Like most everyone else (I’m presuming), it is very difficult for me to not react to my emotional triggers. So…how to make my sensitivity work for me when I get triggered becomes an important question.

My initial reaction to emotional triggers in the past would put me into a shell, into moods for hours, if not days. I would feel angry, hurt, get moody/broody, etc.

Here’s what I do now: I do not discount what I feel, or try to push it away, or get philosophical about it…in fact I allow myself an initial inner reaction, like, “#$#L$ M_F!!…for a few minutes…but then I also include “Thank You, thank you, thank you!” even though I don’t feel genuine gratitude at the moment…but I know the gratitude does and will come.

Here’s what I do: I always keep a blank sheet journal with me with a supply of pens and color pencils. I also have my music.

I CREATE, CREATE, CREATE! DANCE, DANCE, DANCE! If need be, CRY, CRY, CRY!
I know that very delicate thoughts, sensations, insights come to me after I purge out the energy of what triggered me! Exquisitely sublime feelings!

That is where Gratitude comes in…and after a large purge, the sensation of Gratitude feels like…LOVE!

Dance of Well Being

IMG_0020

Repetitive movement, such as while walking, dancing, or running, creates an ongoing flow of sensations that can be felt even when the movement has been stopped. The vibrations continue on, reverberating, echoing through the body and can be tracked or sensed to extremely subtle depths.

Similarly, the sensations of laughter, giggles and smiles can be felt to finer and finer levels of subtlety.

What can you do with this sensitivity? Well, explore for yourself. The waves of sensations that play upon the sheerest fabric of your awareness is a most luxurious, ecstatic experience!

But do not take my word for it. Again, explore for yourself. Follow sensations to the finest balance point of awareness. Follow the prompts of the sensations as they move wave-like and pulse-like through the body in finer and finer vibrations.

As you continue to listen and to feel deeper and deeper into sensation, surrender happens when you allow the body to move/dance, first in micro-movements…and then in contortions that result from the buildup of subtle ecstatic energies that flow in the cavernous depths just below all vibrations.

For example, when listening to music that activates within you the desire to dance, as you feel into the sensations moving through the body, the feelings can be a kind of twisting, spiraling, contorting of the body that seems to squeeze the feel good juices as though through every cell of the body.

The feeling this imparts is one of extreme well being, pleasure, of being in love, of being inspired to play, dance, draw, sing…to just enjoy being, to enjoy the simple act of breathing!

Harmonics of Love

I like to think of certain emotions as being “harmonics” or “overtones” of the fundamental vibration of Love. For example, the feelings of gratitude and joy can be thought of as overtones or harmonics of Love.

Just as in singing, the overtones or “partials” have a direct correlation to the fundamental note being sung. They seem to hover above the dominant note.

Merriam Webster defines the word overtone (in its musical connotation):

one of the higher tones produced simultaneously with the fundamental and that with the fundamental comprise a complex musical tone

And Webster’s simple definition:

an idea or quality that is suggested without being said directly

If we tune into the frequency or fundamental vibration of Love, the overtones of Love would be gratitude, joy, etc. Can you see where I’m going with this?

I believe that the power in mantras (sacred sanskrit prayers) are in the overtones. In overtone singing (or throat singing), the overtones or harmonics seem to float over the fundamental note being sung. They sound ethereal…and the effects can be felt in the body, ranging from relaxing to ecstatic.

The fine vibrations of the overtones seem to create “suggestions” or “echoes” of sensations, exquisitely felt in the spine and in the body as Bliss.

If you’d like to experience (and feel) the power of vocal overtones for yourselves, I have some free lessons that I offer to get you started. All it takes is a childlike willingness to play, along with an openness to deeply feel. The free lessons can be found here.

Living Gratitude

Bruce Manaka Art

The feeling of gratitude, when we tune into the sensation that it evokes in the body, may start out as an outwardly verbal or inwardly spoken “Thank You!” to someone or something that triggers the gratitude response. If we take deep notice of what we feel within, it may perhaps be likened to feelings of joy and love. It might also be said that joy and love triggers gratitude and that gratitude triggers joy and love.

Gratitude, joy, love have certain sensations that can be reproduced in the body without any associated outer circumstance or “cause.” It seems to require just being aware of the feelings and corresponding sensations that occur in the body (especially the spine). When experiencing any degree of gratitude, love, or joy that arises for whatever reason it is a matter of allowing ourselves to feel/experience without attaching any story or narrative to the experience…just being with the sensations.

When we learn to “capture” the sensations of love, joy, gratitude in our bodies, I think of the sensations as an experience of Bliss, that when followed deeper and deeper into the body, is felt as a kind of nectar-like substance that can be luxuriated in, pushed/pulled/squeezed through the spine and body.

Gratitude, love, joy all become a play and dance of subtlety in the spine, enjoyed without need of any outer cause. It is a way of living always in Gratitude!

Danced by Kundalini

The resonance of the body shifts as you allow yourself to “just be” in your meditation “practice.” The idea of “practicing” meditation falls away as you tune deeper and deeper into the experience of the energetic field, allowing the awareness of its magnetic current to expand naturally and easily. In this way, meditation becomes a doorway or portal to the Divine Current, a great releasing of self to the dance and radiation of Spirit! It may outwardly look like quietly sitting, or it may look like a whirling dance of ecstatic movement. In utter stillness or ecstatic dance, the inner experience is a total abandonment to the Blissful Current!

It is interesting to note that in my serious “practice” of meditation (Kriya technique), my seriousness and adherence to the strict discipline of meditation would ironically and ultimately be the “wall” beyond which I could not, for the life of me, seem to be able to go beyond. I derived a lot of satisfaction and sense of peace from meditation, but after years of “practice,” it became a static routine.

Looking back at those years, it is very easy now to see that I was needing to lighten up… a lot… a whole lot! Now there are many positives that can be derived from being strict and disciplined… It’s just that my narrow focus on technique became a rigid barrier to the openness and fluidity required in order to “feel” the delicate and subtle Bliss currents. I was so intent on “finding God” and “getting into the spine” that I missed Her gentle touch during the many times that She tried to get my attention. I was so busy doing my “108 kriyas” and six hour meditations that I did not know how to recognize her voice, nor did I know how to respond whenever She invited me to “come out and play.” I learned well to hide behind my meditations and discipline.

Connecting with the Kundalini Bliss currents in the spine is in some ways like learning to ride a bicycle… once you learn, you never forget. The point is in getting to that place wherein you viscerally “know” and can “feel” the connection, the sensations that seem to arise from the deepest primordial feelings connected with pleasure, survival, fear, love, etc. We already are familiar with these sensations. It’s just that we humans, for the most part, have forgotten how to “dance” with Kundalini… we have also forgotten how to “be” danced by Her.

This is where “lightening up” comes in… releasing rigidity around the many layers of beliefs and assumptions that we may have about God, Guru, spirituality, techniques, etc. These beliefs may be perfectly beautiful and fine, but the idea is to allow a wider space, a beginner’s mindset in order for expansion to happen. Kundalini seems to require a very large field of play wherever She shows up!

When She does show up, perhaps as a gentle sensation in the spine, it is helpful to relax and “pay attention,” to feel deeply. This may all sound quite obvious, but the idea is to “follow subtlety,” to follow the finest nuances of vibration and sensations as they move in the bodily field. As you learn to apprehend finer and finer sensations, you also learn that the entire body can be thought of as a “Bliss Generating Machine.” You then have learned to dance with Kundalini and to be danced by Her!

Subtleties of Bliss Vibration – The Divine Electricity

The subtlety of the bliss vibration when moving through the bodily field holds the mind, breath, life force and body in a ravishing balance of expansion/contraction/stillness. It feels and experiences the blissful resonance as though electrified, woven into the Divine Fabric of Creation!

The mind and body that is held in the Blissful Current becomes a conduit of the Divine Electricity. The pulsations move like quicksilver through the bodily field. The consciousness is then invited to focus/immerse itself in the finest nuance of sensation…the play of subtlety becomes intoxicating, taking the mind to deeper and deeper levels of fine vibrations…an ecstatic dance upon the tip of a needle! Every breath blissful, each movement an exaltation of the Divine Song!

It seems that all that is required for the bliss experience is the releasing of thoughts and patterns that are like heavy blankets around the bodily field. Energetic surrender happens when the physical body and the energy body releases its strong hold on worries, anxieties and fears, along with the heavy belief system we may have in place regarding expectations and assumptions about God and spirituality. With deep letting go comes a great “opening up” and sensitivity to primal feelings that can be at once scary and exhilarating. The releasing of the heavy veils need not occur all at once. All that is needed is a little more room to feel.

The experience of the Bliss Vibration, even in its beginning phases is one that unveils the face of great beauty and mystery, along with a feeling of undying gratitude!

Pay attention to the heart, to the field of energy and move always towards Love/Bliss, no matter how delicate or subtle the sensations. The Divine Electricity, as it flows through the “field,” holds the body in certain positions that magnify the energy. The body then begins to charge until the energy build-up “dances” the body into a different “posture.” When focused upon the Bliss, the attention seems to naturally be drawn inwards to the sensations. Meditation then happens easily and effortlessly.

The spine especially becomes charged with the Divine Nectar, but any part of the body can be focused upon and charged. The body, as part of the “electrical circuitry” can be felt as a field of energy and any part can be explored and experienced in relation to the energetic flow.

In the allowing and surrendering to the Divine Current, there are no “techniques” to practice. Rather, the Bliss Vibration creates its own way and dance through the instrument of the body and consciousness. Spirit is enjoying itself through its dance and play through the bodily field!
