Harmonics of Love

I like to think of certain emotions as being “harmonics” or “overtones” of the fundamental vibration of Love. For example, the feelings of gratitude and joy can be thought of as overtones or harmonics of Love.

Just as in singing, the overtones or “partials” have a direct correlation to the fundamental note being sung. They seem to hover above the dominant note.

Merriam Webster defines the word overtone (in its musical connotation):

one of the higher tones produced simultaneously with the fundamental and that with the fundamental comprise a complex musical tone

And Webster’s simple definition:

an idea or quality that is suggested without being said directly

If we tune into the frequency or fundamental vibration of Love, the overtones of Love would be gratitude, joy, etc. Can you see where I’m going with this?

I believe that the power in mantras (sacred sanskrit prayers) are in the overtones. In overtone singing (or throat singing), the overtones or harmonics seem to float over the fundamental note being sung. They sound ethereal…and the effects can be felt in the body, ranging from relaxing to ecstatic.

The fine vibrations of the overtones seem to create “suggestions” or “echoes” of sensations, exquisitely felt in the spine and in the body as Bliss.

If you’d like to experience (and feel) the power of vocal overtones for yourselves, I have some free lessons that I offer to get you started. All it takes is a childlike willingness to play, along with an openness to deeply feel. The free lessons can be found here.

Mindfulness as Dance/Play/Romance

BruceManakaArt4

Mindfulness is a way to tune the awareness immediately to the overall resonance of the moment, to the awareness of “how I feel in this moment.” From this information we are then able to make choices that are more in alignment with how we wish to feel. We humans, if even slightly introspective, will usually want to feel expansive, happy, loving, etc.

Mindfulness accepts whatever feelings comes up, tuning into the overall sensations that arise in the body, along with any corresponding thoughts.

Now here is the great value of mindfulness: when the attention is placed fully on the sensations of the body, following to finer and finer subtlety of vibration, the mind releases its tight hold on thoughts and the thinking process that oftentimes goes ’round and ’round, holding the mind in stories of  “why I feel so ____ (fill in the blank).”

Something interesting happens, besides helping us to “chill out.” It seems that just by placing our attention on any part of the body, the energy and feeling grows/magnifies in that area of the body. The natural movement of mind is then to expand into the “opening” created.

The sensation of this expansion, I believe is the birthplace of creativity. When followed to deeper and deeper subtlety, the feeling moves the body to dance, to sing, to create music, art, etc.

It is easy to miss the benefits of mindfulness (as well as meditation) when “practiced” as  disciplines or techniques. The mindset and approach of one who “practices” discipline and techniques oftentimes does not include the knowing and wisdom of when to release discipline and technique.

When the deeply subtle connection is made with the blissful life force in the spine, the “practice” of mindfulness or meditation no longer has meaning as it becomes more of a dance/play/romance with the creative force moving through the body.

Release Mind, Release Time!

BruceManakaArt3

[The following is intended as a description of the visceral experience of life force in the body, when one tunes into the subtleties of its movement. My hope is that you “feel” this.]

The coiling, serpentine energies in the body holds the mind, body and breath in an ecstatic squeeze. The energy, along with mind is pushed up the spine… and the body is then held in a contortion of most sublime sensations!

The Divine Embrace is experienced as a blissful spiral of energy squeezed/pushed up the spine, holding the mind/attention in a vice grip of the energetic current of life force…all outside of time!

The movement of mind seems to create our experience of time. Stop/release the movement of mind and time dissolves into the Divine Moment!

Release mind, release time!

Mindfulness as a Way to Connect With Life Force

BruceManakaArt2

Mindfulness is like a barometer that allows us to tune in immediately to our state of being, whether up, down, moody, upbeat, energetic, depleted, happy, sad, neutral, etc. etc.

Mindfulness can be thought of as an awareness of Self in all of its complexity of feelings and thoughts and distilling it all down into the simplicity of the moment, experienced as the overall resonance of feeling, of sensation, of life force. The moment, being out of time, communicates to the awareness a sense of being energetically up or down and all the degrees of in-between.

In the Divine Moment there is no story of sadness or happiness, despair or joy. There is only an energetic experience/sense of contraction or expansion.

Embedded in the feeling/connection of the Life Force is an invitation to go deeper and wider. Life Force seems to naturally seek wider channels through which to flow. Mindfulness then becomes an inner prompt to follow Life Force to deeper and deeper subtleties of Itself.

When we are ensconced in the dance and play of mindfulness, we become intimately aware of how our emotional feeling states are connected with our energetic levels. For example, the gravitational pull of our habits may have us helplessly locked in the seemingly endless cycles of our moods…and yet with the visceral experience of Life Force, there is an embedded knowingness/wisdom of how to shift such moods to wider and higher expressions of the Self.

Mindfulness connects us directly with Life Force… which offers a way out of the endless cycles of moods.

The Serpent Dance – Connecting With the Bliss Vibration

Bruce Manaka ArtF0584
There is no stopping or holding back the tide! The waves of creation are sweeping through the energetic field of the body, and its cells are adjusting to the increasing intensity of the tsunami of light that is flowing through at this time. Its energetic signature is transformative on a cellular and atomic level.

Feel! Feel what is being created in this moment. Beauty is unfolding, Love is dancing through the garden of sensations! The Serpent of Bliss is spiraling through the body, holding you in ecstatic standing waves of the Divine Embrace!

All Creation is like a giant twisting, a wringing out of Bliss! The energy buildup in the body dances through, pushed, pulled, squeezed deliciously through every fiber of the body. The body then twists and turns, every movement blissful, a delicious drink moving like a river of nectar through the bodily field!

Bruce Manaka ArtF0562

“I push upon the Blissful vibration, like a bubble that can be played with, moved along the channels of the spine. The body is as liquid light, nectar of Bliss that pulsates through the field. I create through imagination a matrix, a geometry of form that holds the shape of the formless Joy…”

Breathe in, hold, feel the sensations that play within. Widen the attention to focus upon the finer, subtler sensations, the ecstatic realms. Relax and allow the body to move and to take up the postures that it intuitively knows in order to magnify the Bliss response.

Hold, feel, expand, ride the wave! Mind can play with the subtlest vibrations of the body. Tissues of light, pulsations of Bliss, are playing/dancing on the farthest reaches of mind… fine, finer, finest, the mind can track wherever the energy goes in its push/pull/squeeze play of sensations!

The Bliss Response creates certain potentials of energetic openings that the body can “play” with. The sensation itself has a magnetic push/pull movement in the bodily field, felt especially in the spine… and it can be described as pleasurable, sweet, delicious, ravishing.

In aligning with the sensations, the body may want to move in spiraling motions, or it may intuitively take up certain postures as a way to “squeeze” the energy, adjusting in fine “micromovements” that magnifies the flow of this delicious nectar and holds the body/consciousness in a vortex of feelings.

DSCF0563

The body is a most amazing creation! It is an expression, a wave, a pulsation of Bliss, your connection with the Infinite Spirit! What you “feel” in the subtle realms of awareness is Spirit dancing through the Field of Consciousness. The body can be thought of as a battery that stores, holds and generates Bliss…it is also like a pump that moves Bliss through its electrical field.

The experience of Bliss naturally has a way of holding/attracting the mind’s attention…it is an extremely delicate dance of consciousness, like a radiation, a swelling glory, a wave that moves in all directions. The body is then a doorway to Spirit, through its direct connection with Bliss. Every movement is then exceedingly delicious, luxurious…a delicate balance of fine energies dancing within…

The Body as Doorway to Spirit — Connecting with the Spinal Currents

This post describes a way of using the body’s fine sensitivities to connect with subtle energies in the spine. For practitioners of Kriya Yoga or Kundalini Yoga, the following process is one that I have found to be a simple entryway into the spine and spinal currents.

Acrylic on canvas by Bruce Manaka

The use of visualization and mental imagery has great power when integrated somatically with the sensations that arise in the body. For example, when visualizing energy in the spine, it is fairly easy to “feel” the nuances of vibration when the body is allowed to adjust in fine micro-movements to the inner prompts of sensations. In other words, “going with the flow.”

Any posture will do to help you feel the spinal currents: a slight twist of the spine coupled with deep feeling. The gently held tension builds up the energetic field. As you feel the bubbling sensations that arise, the mind finds an easy focal point upon the energies that seem to grow automatically. With the intensity of focus and the heightening of energy, the change in the frequency range of the body also shifts. As resonance changes, so the mind/consciousness changes, going deeper into the subtle vibratory realms of thoughts and feelings. Meditation then becomes a process of distillation, a refinement of energies, thoughts and sensations into their essences, which then seem to move like a kind of nectar through the bodily field. The experience generates a Bliss response.

Bruce Manaka Art

As you familiarize yourself with this energy, the mind can focus upon any part of the body and feel its connection with the subtle spinal currents. For example, when focusing upon the fine energies in the hands, their movements and mudras become extremely powerful in their capacity to connect with currents in the spine. This is not difficult when we just allow ourselves to feel and luxuriate in the gentle waves of sensations.

Energy (Prana) grows/expands in the bodily field the more we allow ourselves to experience/feel the sensations that arise. The body then helps the energy along by “squeezing” it through the fine channels of the spine. The natural movement of this energy stretches the body upward, elongating the spine as though a powerful magnet lifts the spine and head. A kind of dynamic tension occurs and the balance of tension/relaxation engages as a way to prolong and deepen the Bliss experience.

At a certain point, the body seems to require a shift in posture as a way to release the buildup of energy and as a way to prevent physical exhaustion. The capacity of the body to receive greater and greater “voltage” of this energy increases and the body becomes like a conduit of Divine Energy that expands in resonance with the wider field of “sacred space.” The mind shifts with the heightening of energies…it rises and moves with the radiant waves, with the pulsations of the heaving Ocean of Spirit!

The dance of tension/relaxation that occurs in the field of the body, especially in the spine, becomes a push/pull/squeeze of sensations. Again, this is done with fine micro-movements and ultimately with no discernible movements at all. The mind/body is then experienced as a kind of geometry that is connected intimately with sensations and postures…a pattern of Creation, a radiance of Spirit!

The Resonance of Gratitude

Have you ever noticed that the feelings of gratitude are similar to the ones of Bliss and Love? The experience of gratitude is an open, expansive field of consciousness that has a knowingness of our connection with divine power, regardless of what we may be going through. It is like an anti-gravity machine (as are Love and Bliss) that helps us pull away from the density of thoughts that keep us trapped in patterns of fear and anxiety. Gratitude raises the frequency of consciousness and provides a focus of mind and feelings upon Love/Bliss. The “density” of any difficult circumstance then provides a “workout” partner that we can use to gain strength through and to practice our “dance” of life with.

A deep “Thank You!” to the Universe is like a key that fits into the Universal Lock, the great Mystery of Spirit. That we have a body, mind and heart that experiences all manner of feelings is the greatest mystery. We live and move through our lives as in a dream, believing we have certain limitations… and yet gratitude creates an opening, a space of surrender where—even though we may not understand the overarching vastness of life, we can still “know” that fundamentally we are in the care and love of Spirit.  There is a divine simplicity to life when we are in the resonance of gratitude. Life is then stripped down to a primal understanding: we are babes in the woods dreaming fierce dreams of separation… and gratitude is our ultimate protection through the roiling storms of human suffering.

With the opening of the heart comes an expansion of the creative energy that moves/dances through the field of the body. The impetus to create then seems to come through as a prime directive, a grand force that must be reckoned with. The heart that is wide open to Bliss endeavors to channel the intense energies in whatever shape/form/medium that it resonates with, whether it be through dance, music, art, writing, etc., or through any number of creative founts that may open up.

The mind and body that is tuned to the resonance of gratitude is one in which energy does not get stuck… nor does it get caught up in thought loops of worries and fears. Gratitude is like a deep breath of fresh air that enlivens the spirit, an open door that allows creativity an easy pathway for expression… and it all begins with a simple… “Thank You!”
