Resonance of Being—the Om Vibration, Part V

Any movement and micro-movement can be explored to infinite depths of subtlety as a way to viscerally connect with the fine waves of sensations normally overlooked. By allowing the mind to follow and feel vibrations usually not considered, at a certain point, the mind begins to recognize sensations in parts of the body that might illicit a small “Oh wow!” reaction.

As the exploration into subtlety goes deeper, the reaction can be a bigger, “OH WOW!” along with a sense of wonderment that we’ve not connected with or acknowledged these subtleties sooner in our lives, considering how close they have always been!

Feeling deeper and deeper into the overall sensation of the body, one begins to sense that the chanting/toning of Om can be guided from within to vibrate in resonance with what feels like an underground reverberation. In other words, the chanting of Om is fine-tuned by the resonance of the underlying Hum of Creation!

Resonance of Being—the Om Vibration, Part III

As you continue to relax and feel into the subtle vibrations in the palms (that were started by clapping the hands together, see Part II), you might begin to feel the overall sensation of the body…and ultimately the Hum or Om Vibration. By tuning the mind inwardly on the subtle vibrations, it begins to apprehend its connection with the underlying Hum of all vibrations…felt as One Resonance!

The vocalized sound of Om is a representation of this “One Resonance.” Embedded in this resonance is a sweetness that can be tuned into while toning (or chanting) Om. The vocalizing of Om can be thought of as getting the motor of the body and especially the spinal currents running.

Just like in clapping the hands, the vibrations started in the vocal cords can be—through resonance—felt throughout the body, especially the nasal cavities, lower abdomen, heart area, spine, etc.

The sweetness of the Bliss vibration has a particular resonance that can be tuned into. Like tuning the guitar, or any instrument, the body/mind/psyche can be tuned to the Resonance of Bliss!

Resonance of Being—the Om Vibration, Part I

The “Resonance of Being” can be thought of as the Om Vibration, as referred to in Yogic tradition. The vocalizing of the sound of Om, when toned with the back of the throat wide open (as in Tibetan low-voice chanting), the entire body, especially from the crown of the head to the base of the spine, begins to vibrate in resonance with the vocalized sound.

When the body vibrates in this particular way, it draws the mind deeply within, offering an easy entryway to the sublime experience of the subtle realms. Now, the simple vocal chanting of Om will not necessarily create this “easy” connection. It is easy when the vocalization of Om is accompanied by a deep feeling of the rest of the body (especially the spine) vibrating in resonance with the sound.

In chanting Om, pay attention to keeping the back of the throat wide open, allowing the overtones of sound to go very deep and wide, like in Tibetan Low-Voice chanting. The vibration then easily draws the mind deeply within.

The mind that goes deeply within when chanting Om will experience the sounds and their overtones as ethereal reverberations that have a way of holding body and mind in delicious resonance, as though electrified!

Cosmic Dance!

In exploring the vibrations of vocal sounds/tones, the important part is to feel the sensations that are created in the body, especially the most subtle ones. This draws the mind deeply within and engages the awareness in ways vastly different from our habitual patterns that we’ve grown familiar with.

In other words, by feeling into and attuning ourselves to the very fine and subtle vibrations (as initiated by our vocal cords), we come to realize that the human body and consciousness has infinitely fine sensitivity to vibrations and feelings that we may not have previously experienced…due in part to no inability on our parts to do so, but in the simple reason that it may not have occurred to us to even explore/attempt such an endeavor!

The process is simple: to feel and follow sensations to their point of subtlety. There is no difficulty in doing this. Any perceived difficulty may be that we’re not convinced or intrigued enough to even try this approach. It may not even occur to us to feel beyond and underneath what has become habitual and familiar in our realms of feelings. And yet…

To those who are curious enough to explore the subtle sounds and overtones of their voice, to feel and follow the fine sensations that are created, they will quickly discover very fine vibrations that draws the mind/consciousness deeply within. They will tap into gossamer threads of the finest, tinkling sensations in the spine…and the body goes into and assumes a most delicately balanced “contortion” that holds the mind as though in a silken “vice grip” of most subtle Bliss Resonance!

The body comes to feel like quicksilver, coiling, twisting, contorting…engaged in a kind of Cosmic Dance! It is all infinitely subtle and divinely ravishing!

Vocal Overtones for Opening the Pineal Gland

Sound creates a resonant field of vibration. Vibration creates sensations in the body…which draws the mind inwards…and the inward focus on sensation connects the mind to the subtle underlying “Hum” of the overall vibration of all sensations felt together, the overall experience of Being!

Sounds, as created by our vocal cords, creates resonant field of vibrations that can be felt as sensations in the body…some that are extremely subtle and yet exquisitely sublime. Using the voice to initiate these fine sensations is a most amazing gift that very few understand or make use of.

For example, there are certain “overtones” of vocal sounds that have a way, through resonance, of opening a deep attunement and awareness of the pineal gland/crown area. Again, sound creates vibration, which creates sensation, which draws inwardly the mind.

These vocal sounds vibrate the nasal cavity and crown areas, which draws the awareness to those areas. By feeling into the subtle vibrations there, the mind is interiorized. The particular sound and overtone is a very nasally “nng” sound.

In playing with this particular sound, all thoughts and judgments about how it sounds (good, bad, ugly, beautiful, etc.) must be let go of. This particular way of vocalizing is not so much about singing as it is about creating certain overtones and vibrations that open/expand areas of the body (spine, brain, etc.) which then tunes our mind/body/awareness to very fine and subtle waves and undulations of the “Life Force,” the “Hum/Om” of Creation.

Kundalini Dance of Subtlety Part II

Mother Kundalini

Mother Kundalini

I think that it’s kind of ironic that, for me, Kundalini did not activate for me until having dropped my strong attachments to meditation techniques, as well as leaving an ashram that I lived as a monk for 19 years.

For me, releasing the strong “matrix” of spiritual community and “group think” created an inner feeling of “free-fall,” having nothing to stand on, or hold onto…which then offered me intimations of primal and chaotic sensations/energies moving through my body and psyche.

A few years after having left the ashram, I began singing, vocalizing in very unusual ways: throat singing (similar to Mongolian and Tibetan styles). Singing in this way came very quickly and easily for me. The subtleties of vocal overtones helped me to disconnect my thinking and any stories that would normally go round and round in my head (sadness, grief, etc.)

So many layers of density, of sadness and grief have had to be released/purged in the intervening years (since 2001). Kundalini, in the form of the Mother came to me in 2009. I felt/thought that she was extremely shy. She turned to me three times, without saying anything, beckoning me to follow her into my spine. I intuited immediately and felt her as Kundalini.

I’m glad that there is a mental concept/philosophy such as Kundalini. Otherwise, I might think that I was going a little (or maybe a lot) crazy. It gives my mind something to “chew” on in the sense that my mind seems to go ‘round and ‘round if it cannot make sense of something.

Kundalini, to me, is so far out there, wild, crazy, primal, maddening, blissful, that the mind seems to be right on the borderline of sanity and insanity! I now feel quite safe with Her in the sense of having learned to navigate very strange mental/physical/emotional/spiritual landscapes of Being. It still feels though like being in a world where veils are getting thinner and thinner.

With the onset of Kundalini there has also been times of simply ENDURING…during certain times when no amount of meditation, positive thinking, calling for help seems to ease physical/mental/spiritual suffering. Perhaps it does, but my meaning here is that there seems to be times when we get so “ground to dust” that we don’t have the wherewithal or even the memory to call for help, or shore ourselves up.

This is where Grace seems to come through. And this is my belief: that Kundalini comes with Grace. As blissful and ecstatic as Kundalini can be, it seems to also have a way of grounding us to dust, taking away all props, forcing us to our knees so-to-speak. At least that’s been my experience.

When it had been so, so dark, when I had forgotten myself and how to call for help, this is where Grace had stepped in, like the tiniest sliver of light (my lifeline) in a universe of darkness.

Kundalini, it all seems to be one large Cosmic Dance. Beautiful at times, grotesque at times…but a dance all the same, where we are being asked to let Her lead!

Music to Activate the Bliss Centers in the Spine

IMG_0186

Do you ever listen to certain songs that you cannot get enough of, playing them over and over again? It is like the body, mind, spirit, emotions, etc. seem to receive a kind of sustenance from them.

I’m remembering a particularly intense time in my life when I played Sarah Brightman’s “Time to Say Goodbye” over and over on my cd player. It was one of those CDs that I just could not get enough of. And it just so happened that, during that time, I was saying goodbye, leaving the monastic community that I had belonged to for 19 years.

One day, months later, it seemed that I had had my fill. I put the CD down and have not played it since. It was as though my body, mind and psyche craved the particular melodies, lyrics and overall resonance of the songs…until I had my fill.

Lately, I’ve been attracted to non-English speaking songs and artists, because the sounds of different languages seem to “tickle” or “activate” different cravings/desires/inspiration/pleasure centers of my mind and brain.

For the last couple of months, I’ve been listening to Sara Tavares, especially her “Ess Amor” and “muna Xeia.” Those songs, for me fall into the category of “so beautiful that they hurt.” I do not understand the meaning of the lyrics, but I like/crave certain sounds and overtones of what she sings.

When I listen to music, I feel for the sounds and resonances that vibrate/activate the pleasurable “feel good” centers in the spine. In this way, certain music has been hugely beneficial in maintaining well-being and for deepening sensitivity to inspiration and the bliss resonance.
