The mind easily recognizes familiar objects (patterns) in its environment, all the things it has come to “know.” However, it can also easily fall into habitual/addictive patterns of thinking and doing, ones not necessarily beneficial to itself.
Mind can be thought of as a pattern generator and pattern recognizer. Understand that different patterns of behavior and thinking can just as easily be created, ones that are more in alignment with Higher Self.
By observing/noticing the mind (as in meditation), it is fairly easy to “see” or understand that the mind has layers upon layers of “noticing.” There is the superficial noticing of the environment and things in it, including our bodies. There is the noticing of thinking, of desires, feelings, likes/dislikes, etc. There is also the noticing of our sense of self, of our “I-ness,” the one who experiences.
Along with this type of superficial observing/noticing (which is easily taken for granted), there can also be a noticing of circumstances in our lives that seem to be out of our control or understanding, oftentimes in the areas of relationships, health, finances. It could seem like there are forces at work below the radar of our knowing that create havoc in our lives.
For these unseen and “dark” forces, we think of as being part of our “unconscious” or “subconscious.” We are able to observe or notice these forces through the effects that they have in our lives. Is it possible to observe these forces directly, to bring them into the light of the conscious?
Just below the superficial noticing of our environment, body, thoughts/feelings and sense of self, when we direct our attention inwardly to the underlying sensations and feelings, there is a noticing of the overall vibration. And just below this vibration, when one is fairly relaxed and quiet, there can be felt a subtle “feel good” feeling/sensation (akin to light giddiness)…and observed/felt underneath this are sensations that seem to initiate coiling/twisting/squeezing reverberations that express in the spine and body through “micro movements.”
This is a very different kind of relationship that can be experienced with our sense of self, with our life force…an awareness that is quite different from what we’ve grown familiar with.
Feeling into the subtleties of vibrations/sensations, as felt deeply in the body, is a practice we may not have truly understood, even through all the meditation and somatic exercises we’ve engaged in.
There is a simplicity in just feeling deeper and deeper into body sensations…and yet the power and beauty of this way of being with life energy is missed because of some mechanism of mind that has a way of short-circuiting our noticing what is just below the threshold of what we’ve come to consider “normal” and “familiar.”
It is the finest of barriers, because the body is rife with sensations, both obvious and subtle. By the mere tuning into subtle sensations and following deeper and deeper into the body and spine, an opening is created in our understanding and knowingness that…FINALLY… allows us to explore vibrations outside the range of what we’ve been accustomed to.
This simple allowing of ourselves to just feel deeply (below the obvious superficial sensations) is monumental as it represents a vastly different relationship with our life force, one that is not fenced in by the narrow spectrum of experience that had become our default pattern of existence.
