Meditation Techniques: Can they Awaken Kundalini? Part I

I think of meditation techniques as a “setting up” or “positioning” of the body in a way that allows the body/mind/psyche to accommodate the growing intensity and flow of the Life Force (Kundalini) as it builds up in the system.

However, the buildup and flow of energy does not happen automatically by merely setting up and positioning the body (as prescribed by meditation technique). There is also the instruction of focusing the mind one-pointedly during practice.

Again, as many veteran meditators (myself included) can attest to, the focusing of the mind in “one-pointed” concentration is difficult (to say the least) and does not seem to happen automatically just because we sit in meditation.

The “missing piece” for me has been the understanding that meditation technique is just the “setting up” portion and meditation happens when the dynamic connection and relationship with the Life Force (the Bliss Resonance) is established. There is a subtle point here…

There is oftentimes an assumption that if we practice meditation technique long and deeply enough, at some point the mind is brought into one-pointed concentration and we attain a certain state of enlightenment/rapture/samadhi/bliss, etc.

However, in my opinion, the Divine Connection does not occur through technique, in step-by-step linear fashion…at least from my limited understanding, experience and perspective. Let me explain my “opinion”…

I think most meditators (again myself included) have experienced certain degrees of peace, rapture, visions, etc. What I have also seen (and experienced) is that we can go for years and years (and a whole lifetime) without a deepening of our connection with Spirit/Kundalini.

In other words, meditation periods gets stagnant. Many meditators (even in ashrams) get to a point of just “punching in the time card” of meditation practice…and some stop altogether. This is not to cast fault on meditation technique or the meditator.

It is the assumption or expectation that meditation technique/practice will ultimately give us what we want—deep connection with Spirit. With this assumption/expectation comes a kind of “waiting for,” expectant approach that longs for depth, but is easily distracted by the patterns of mind that stays on the surface.

Here is my point: There is an underlying resonance (or Hum) of Creation that is already vibrating within us. Its reverberation is dynamic, undulating, spiraling through our energetic field. If we are not attuned to its frequency/resonance, we can sit in meditation until the “cows come home” and not make the connection!

To me the “missing ingredient” has been the simple feeling deeper and deeper into the subtlety of all sensations. It might seem “too simple” but it is huge switch that ultimately turns on the “high voltage” current of Life Force, of Bliss in the body! (To be Continued)

Tuning Into the Subtlety of Sensations, Part II

With just a little bit of introspection, we can observe in our lives how easily it is for the mind to be “captured” by distractions of habits, thought patterns, addictions, anger, moodiness, desires, likes/dislikes, etc.

Conversely, habits of mind also makes it easy for us to go through our day-to-day activities…and it can even make difficult tasks easy to do. The power of the mind to create patterns and habits that benefit our lives is a great positive in our lives.

In our day-to-day life, our “normal,” default existence is governed by habit patterns (both helpful and detrimental) formed over a lifetime. As for the detrimental patterns, it is easy to feel helpless in the face of what may seem like uncontrollable forces at work, keeping us enslaved to the very habits/patterns that we ourselves created, allowing the powers of mind to create the very patterns/habits that we now decry.

Is there a way to understand and utilize these powers in ways that are more in alignment with our Higher Selves? Understand that underneath the activity/movement of mind there is an underlying vibration/hum out of which arises the mind. This vibration can be felt as a sensation that draws the mind’s attention deeply within. This sensation, when followed to its point of subtlety in the spine, also connects the awareness with what feels like a vast resonance that surrounds the energetic field of the body, the very life force of creation.

There is no difficulty in experiencing the subtlety of life force. Sometimes it is just a mere lack of considering or acknowledging the sensitivity that we already have. We’ve grown comfortable with the patterns and habits of our default existence and do not consider that there are infinite subtleties and nuances that can be easily felt/experienced…if only we allowed ourselves to do so!

By simply noticing and following the overall sensations of the body to their point of subtlety, we begin to feel an underlying vibration that naturally draws the mind/attention deeply within…and by its very nature is blissful.

It is this “Hum” of Creation, the Bliss Resonance that can hold the mind in the “vice-grip” of rapture, in the energetic contortion that is created in the body.

Contortions of the Bliss Resonance, Part I

When feeling into the overall vibrations of the body, undulations and reverberations of most delicious sensations can be felt moving through the spine…with each breath, with each micro movement…an ecstatic dance of intoxicating subtlety!

The body naturally and automatically contorts, squeezing sensations that feel sweet and nectar-like through the spine…holding the mind and body in deep rapture, an infinitely slow dance of coiling, squeezing, swooning Bliss!

There is no difficulty in experiencing the Bliss Resonance (the Hum of Creation) save in the unwillingness to feel and follow what is already in the range of our feeling experience.

The mind and body are exquisitely set up to experience the finest nuances of vibration. However, the fine instruments of our sensitivity gets waylaid/distracted by a world/cultural mindset that does not support (or has forgotten) how to encourage the simple mindfulness/attentiveness to the underlying “Hum/Om” that is accessible to all.

The Bliss Resonance is so very close! It is foundational and background to our very existence! We lose connection to it because of the strong overlay/resonance of a world mindset that places high value and attention on coarse and superficial vibrations/feelings…and low or no value on fine/subtle vibrations/feelings.
