Lessons from the Flu – Part 3

BruceArt0368

The body is an infinitely creative, bliss generating machine. It was not meant to be an instrument of torture, although it may seem so when we are sick, injured or out of balance.

I know that when I’m sick or injured, my energy level is compromised and it is difficult to feel upbeat, happy, or of positive mind. During such times it seems the energy is diverted primarily towards healing and going “off-line,” disconnecting from activities that would normally be engaging to us: our creative desires, passions, interests, etc. There is only the desire to rest, sleep, to regain energetic balance. There is also an inner sense or calling to simply endure.

As we move towards balance, our energy level increases. If I’m mindful during this period of coming back “online,” I notice a resuming of feelings of well being, of happiness and creativity.

I notice the increasing energy is like turning the switch back on to the “feel good” juices in the body…a reconnecting with the Bliss Resonance.

Being mindful during the transition from sickness to well-being offers an amazing “Aha!” moment of viscerally connecting with and witnessing the birth of the Bliss Resonance in your consciousness. Once this connection is made, you will always remain connected, even during sickness and imbalance…you will know its most subtle hiding place in the spine, where you can “hear” it sleeping.

Harmonics of Love

I like to think of certain emotions as being “harmonics” or “overtones” of the fundamental vibration of Love. For example, the feelings of gratitude and joy can be thought of as overtones or harmonics of Love.

Just as in singing, the overtones or “partials” have a direct correlation to the fundamental note being sung. They seem to hover above the dominant note.

Merriam Webster defines the word overtone (in its musical connotation):

one of the higher tones produced simultaneously with the fundamental and that with the fundamental comprise a complex musical tone

And Webster’s simple definition:

an idea or quality that is suggested without being said directly

If we tune into the frequency or fundamental vibration of Love, the overtones of Love would be gratitude, joy, etc. Can you see where I’m going with this?

I believe that the power in mantras (sacred sanskrit prayers) are in the overtones. In overtone singing (or throat singing), the overtones or harmonics seem to float over the fundamental note being sung. They sound ethereal…and the effects can be felt in the body, ranging from relaxing to ecstatic.

The fine vibrations of the overtones seem to create “suggestions” or “echoes” of sensations, exquisitely felt in the spine and in the body as Bliss.

If you’d like to experience (and feel) the power of vocal overtones for yourselves, I have some free lessons that I offer to get you started. All it takes is a childlike willingness to play, along with an openness to deeply feel. The free lessons can be found here.

Mindfulness as Dance/Play/Romance

BruceManakaArt4

Mindfulness is a way to tune the awareness immediately to the overall resonance of the moment, to the awareness of “how I feel in this moment.” From this information we are then able to make choices that are more in alignment with how we wish to feel. We humans, if even slightly introspective, will usually want to feel expansive, happy, loving, etc.

Mindfulness accepts whatever feelings comes up, tuning into the overall sensations that arise in the body, along with any corresponding thoughts.

Now here is the great value of mindfulness: when the attention is placed fully on the sensations of the body, following to finer and finer subtlety of vibration, the mind releases its tight hold on thoughts and the thinking process that oftentimes goes ’round and ’round, holding the mind in stories of  “why I feel so ____ (fill in the blank).”

Something interesting happens, besides helping us to “chill out.” It seems that just by placing our attention on any part of the body, the energy and feeling grows/magnifies in that area of the body. The natural movement of mind is then to expand into the “opening” created.

The sensation of this expansion, I believe is the birthplace of creativity. When followed to deeper and deeper subtlety, the feeling moves the body to dance, to sing, to create music, art, etc.

It is easy to miss the benefits of mindfulness (as well as meditation) when “practiced” as  disciplines or techniques. The mindset and approach of one who “practices” discipline and techniques oftentimes does not include the knowing and wisdom of when to release discipline and technique.

When the deeply subtle connection is made with the blissful life force in the spine, the “practice” of mindfulness or meditation no longer has meaning as it becomes more of a dance/play/romance with the creative force moving through the body.

Release Mind, Release Time!

BruceManakaArt3

[The following is intended as a description of the visceral experience of life force in the body, when one tunes into the subtleties of its movement. My hope is that you “feel” this.]

The coiling, serpentine energies in the body holds the mind, body and breath in an ecstatic squeeze. The energy, along with mind is pushed up the spine… and the body is then held in a contortion of most sublime sensations!

The Divine Embrace is experienced as a blissful spiral of energy squeezed/pushed up the spine, holding the mind/attention in a vice grip of the energetic current of life force…all outside of time!

The movement of mind seems to create our experience of time. Stop/release the movement of mind and time dissolves into the Divine Moment!

Release mind, release time!

Mindfulness as a Way to Connect With Life Force

BruceManakaArt2

Mindfulness is like a barometer that allows us to tune in immediately to our state of being, whether up, down, moody, upbeat, energetic, depleted, happy, sad, neutral, etc. etc.

Mindfulness can be thought of as an awareness of Self in all of its complexity of feelings and thoughts and distilling it all down into the simplicity of the moment, experienced as the overall resonance of feeling, of sensation, of life force. The moment, being out of time, communicates to the awareness a sense of being energetically up or down and all the degrees of in-between.

In the Divine Moment there is no story of sadness or happiness, despair or joy. There is only an energetic experience/sense of contraction or expansion.

Embedded in the feeling/connection of the Life Force is an invitation to go deeper and wider. Life Force seems to naturally seek wider channels through which to flow. Mindfulness then becomes an inner prompt to follow Life Force to deeper and deeper subtleties of Itself.

When we are ensconced in the dance and play of mindfulness, we become intimately aware of how our emotional feeling states are connected with our energetic levels. For example, the gravitational pull of our habits may have us helplessly locked in the seemingly endless cycles of our moods…and yet with the visceral experience of Life Force, there is an embedded knowingness/wisdom of how to shift such moods to wider and higher expressions of the Self.

Mindfulness connects us directly with Life Force… which offers a way out of the endless cycles of moods.

The Spirit of Creativity

Image

I write and draw everyday, not out of discipline or because I feel that I “have to,” but because it simply feels really good to do so…and to me it doesn’t matter if what I express on any particular day is meaningful to me or not. I create from an inner urge, a prime directive that nudges my energy to move and express through the field of the Higher Self’s body/mind/heart consciousness.

When I allow the creative force to move through an opened heart space, a certain momentum builds up to allow the flow and feeling of inspiration. There is then very little effort required…more like relaxing or surrendering into the flow and resonance of a vast and powerful river.

The Spirit of Creativity is like a divine song playing through the field of consciousness that moves us to vibrate energetically to its emanations. We then cannot help but dance to the joy that wells up from within and to create from the depths of inspiration that we have been gifted with. There is a divine simplicity to all of this: tuning into creativity is a matter of allowing ourselves to just be…in the fullness of all that we are, the dark as well as the light. Any perceived difficulty in doing this is in our resistance to deep feelings.

Image

Creative inspiration is very much connected with the Bliss Vibration that can be experienced when we open ourselves to the fine nuances of feelings. Because of its innately ecstatic sensation, it doesn’t take much to keep the attention upon its vibration. In the beginning, the only challenge is in recognizing its initial presence and in making a visceral connection with its subtle radiance in the bodily field, especially in the spine. There are many avenues to its experience in the body: dance, meditation, art, music, fasting, etc. The simple secret is in learning to track the sensations to finer and finer subtlety. Certain postures and micromovements can help immensely in building the energetic magnet of the Blissful Resonance. In this matter, there are no “secret” postures or breathing techniques. It is a matter of deeply feeling into any posture that one decides upon and tuning into the finest sensations that naturally arise.

Image

In cultivating this energy there can be tendencies in the beginning to violently contort the body, as it may not as yet be accustomed to the high voltage moving through it. During such times, gentleness is a good thing to remember so as not to injure or exhaust oneself. With experience we learn the upper limits of what our bodies are energetically capable of and also come to understand the many ways of dancing with these energies without “boiling” over. We learn to cultivate and to build up immense reserves of energy that can then be used for healing as well as for creative work.

Harmonics of Love

There are infinite subtleties of sound and vibration that play within the bodily field. Galaxies of the finest energies are scintillating within, waiting to be experienced as passageways to the most sublime harmonics of Love. Every movement, every breath, every posture of the body can be used as a magnetic attractor of the ecstatic bliss vibration! Even during periods of sadness, physical pain, anger and the myriad emotional states that are part of being human, the underlying bliss can be felt deeply when we allow ourselves to feel and embrace all aspects of our humanity, even those parts that may be uncomfortable to look at and acknowledge.

In a very real sense, the body is a love/bliss attractor and generator. It is not just a physical place for the embodiment of the soul, but is also meant to be a doorway to the experience of Cosmic Love. When the bodily energies are in alignment with the universal currents of the bliss vibration, then it begins to dance like the leaves of the aspen tree quaking ecstatically in the wind. There is no impediment to this experience save in our own resistance to the depths of our own feelings. Afraid of vastness, terrified of primal nature, we seek comfort in controlled and familiar environments, not wanting to look into the abyss of our Infinite Selves.

Where to begin? Sometimes I like to begin from stillness and silence, feeling the body as a vast field of vibration. Then, a gentle and exquisitely slow twisting of the spine with the awareness of each underlying vibration as they arise. As you continue paying attention to what comes up, at a certain point you may notice certain pleasant or pleasureable feelings arising, vibrations that are subtle and yet distinct. Pay special attention to these fine energies and then allow the body to adjust itself according to how it wishes to move. It inherently knows how to flow in ways that builds the magnetic field of the blissful vibration. This is surrendering to the flow of Cosmic Energy, getting out of the way of that which is our natural state of Being.

Explore the finest nuances of the bliss vibration, following to its deepest source. As you continue to move and dance to this Divine Song, you are creating the geometries of Sacred Space within your body and in its environment. Understand that you are the portal to dimensions of indescribable Beauty! Play with the harmonics of Love. Every breath, every movement, every nuance of sound and vibration is an abode of Love! It is all feeling! The wind, the sky, it is all part of the pulse beat of Love, the breath of Bliss!

Bliss is dancing in the ocean of the bodily field. Remain open to the cues that show up for you. Learn to just Be! The power of Being has an attracting force that is divinely magnetic and will draw to you all the circumstances and people necessary to manifest the desires of the heart!
